The Mantra That Has Seen Me Through It All

It’s no secret that I’m an advocate of hard work. I believe there’s nothing more empowering for people (and for society) than when we are providing for ourselves and our families. The problem, however, is when hard-working people—like my trans brothers and sisters—are discriminated against simply because they are trans. Some employers tell us, “I can’t hire you; you’d confuse the customers.” And, you know what? That’s legal in 32 states. Because of the lack of legal protections and the unwillingness of employers to give us an equal chance, the unemployment rate in the transgender community is double the national unemployment rate—quadruple if you are a transgender person of color.…

    Meet My Friend, Ella

Sometimes life happens in the funniest ways. After my interview with Diane Sawyer aired last spring, my friend Ronda got a call from a guy she went out with many, many years ago. He told her that his child had recently transitioned and had become his daughter, Ella. I learned a little bit about Ella’s story and invited her to one of my regular girls’ nights, so she could meet all the other women. She was just absolutely delightful—and so appreciated being a part of everything. She was like a sponge, learning as much as she could from these trans women with years of experience. I realized how important it…

Happy New Year, my friends! I hope 2016 is treating you fabulously already. Several of you asked me what my New Year’s resolutions are, and — to be honest with you — I was stumped. Send me a note on social media — I’d love to hear what you’re up to. Have a question? Ask me here. For more information on the transgender movement, see a list of resources here.

    Still So Much To Learn

In the first scene of the first episode of I Am Cait, I was up at 4:30 in the morning worrying, “I hope I get it right.” Since I told the world my truth six months ago, I’ve tried to be a force for good. I’ve met and listened to many people in the transgender community, from trans women of color, to the parents of trans kids who’ve taken their own lives, to people working in the courts and legislatures and media to make the world a better, safer place for trans people. I’ve spent a lot of time listening to people tell me their stories. Even now, at the…

    What I’ve Learned

Hello friends. Caitlyn here. As the first season of my show, I Am Cait, comes to end, I find myself reflecting on my journey so far and just how rewarding it has been. My experience over the last four months has been incredible. Many people have come up to me and told me their stories. It turns out lots of you have friends or family members who are transgender. Who knew? I never would have had these conversations if I had not come out publicly and finally lived my truth. For so long, people – myself included – were embarrassed to talk about transgender issues and now we finally have…

Tales From A Camp For Extraordinary Kids

Hi friends! Not too long ago I had the honor of visiting a very special place called Camp Aranu’tiq. On the surface, it looks like any other children’s summer camp – kids ages 8-15 are running around doing sports, swimming, and lots of other fun activities. However, it’s a retreat entirely for transgender children, teens, and their families. Pretty neat stuff. My friends and I spent time talking with the campers and I probably learned more from them than they did from me. I was so impressed by them – these young people have it together. Despite the tremendous challenge of dealing with their gender identities, they have incredible aspirations…

Hello friends! I hope your week is off to an awesome start. While I can’t respond to each of you, I want you to know that I’m reading everything and it means so much to me. Here’s a fun question that I seem to get a lot…enjoy! Nancy T.: You are so awesome. I’m just wondering where you keep your gold medal. Is it on display? Nancy, my gold medal is my most-prized possession – I’m so proud of it. However, I never wanted my kids…
